Data Governance

Data governance establishes decision rights with respect to university data for the purpose of ensuring accountability, and defining processes and standards associated with their proper use. Successful data governance helps to ensure that U-M’s primary missions of teaching and learning, research, clinical care, public service, and administration are fulfilled. See the Institutional Data Access and Management section of the U-M IT Strategic Plan for more on the importance of data governance.

Data stewards are responsible for protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of university data. U-M policies, federal and state laws and regulations require that some types of data be handled differently than other types.
